Find Relief from Life’s Pressures

Understanding our emotions gives us a path to release them, which brings relief from life’s many pressures.

Make time for yourself

Women in the Church face tremendous pressure to meet expectations with family, work, church service, and everything else. It seems paradoxical, but spending some time on self care helps all the other parts operate more smoothly.

Living without the stress

You can’t imagine what if feels like to recognize that the stress you feel is such a small part of what you’re facing. Perspective releases you from the chains of stress that bind women everywhere.

Healthy emotional expression

Remember, this is not easy! Life is not easy! It’s about learning to deal with life’s emotions. All of them…
This allows you to release the pressure in a healthy way.

Form a Solid Support Network

Women need their sisters. Sometimes it feels like nobody can understand the road I’m walking, but our sisters are walking similar paths. Come see why we need each other.

Relief Society

Relief Society was created for a reason. Come feel the power behind a group of women with a united vision.

Sisterhood

Remember how you feel after a day out with your gals? Imagine having that feeling every week with your Relief Society. That’s our vision. Come learn how.

Relationship

We can become so focused on our families and responsibilities that we forget the other women who need our support… and that we need their support. Sisters are an essential part of God’s plan.

Learn How to Create Sisterhood

All the principles taught at The Light Within are in harmony with the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and people of all beliefs and affiliations are welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are you, and why have you created this retreat?

We are a group of women of varying ages and life experience who have a few commonalities:

  • We are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
  • We have wounds from our past
Somewhere in life, we learned that we can’t face our wounds alone
  • We have found healing path which has deeply impacted our life and brought us closer to the Savior
  • We desire to share that path with others

The Light Within is a peer-led, voluntary group. Collectively, we envision a world where men and women have deep, authentic, personal connections with God and mankind and are living each day to fulfill their divine purpose. We do this by creating a safe place to turn to Jesus Christ and find joy by consciously processing emotions, healing past wounds, and creating a vision of the future. We know that we can’t do it alone – having support from sisters is an essential part of healing.
We do this in the context of the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While remaining separate from the Church, we strive to support the Church and its members in their earthly mission.

What kind of women attend the retreat?

The Light Within is designed for men who are familiar with the culture and teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; however, all women and all beliefs are welcome. Beyond that, there is no single demographic to define who attends the retreat. We have participants who are:

  • In their 20’s and in their 70’s
  • Local church leaders, active members, former members, or women who have been excommunicated
  • Single, married, or divorced
  • Straight and gay
  • Born in pioneer families and recent converts to the Church
  • We’ve even had members of other churches attend!

At The Light Within, we focus on our commonality as women of God, and respect each woman’s unique expression of his own life and feminity.

What will I get out of attending the retreat?

That depends on you. Every participant will have his own unique experience that will depend on his life and the choices he makes before, during, and after the retreat.

At the retreat you will be offered tools and opportunities to view your life, your relationship with Christ, and your relationship with others in a new light, with the intention of feeling peace, wholeness, and clarity. Most participants leave the retreat feeling a deeper sense of joy and connection with themselves, their sisters, and the Savior.

Our hope is that:

  1. you’ll touch–in a newer, deeper way–the light within yourself to see the gift you are to the world;
  2. you’ll feel empowered to live that way; and
  3. you’ll know you have a group of sisters who support you in living as that woman.
What topics are covered on the retreat?

The topics and themes that you will find covered at The Light Within include:

  • Sisterhood
  • Living as an example of Jesus Christ
  • Transforming past wounds into future growth
  • Connection with others
  • Releasing pain from the past
  • Applying Christ’s atonement
  • Learning from my perceptions and judgments about others
  • Understanding and expressing emotions in a safe way
  • Navigating guilt and shame
  • How I am influenced by both light and dark
  • Authenticity
  • Vulnerability
  • Vision for my future
What is an “experiential” retreat?
Experiential retreats or workshops primarily use active participation methods—live, personal experience—rather than lectures, discussion, or analysis as teaching methods. They use processes designed to create “aha” moments of insight into one’s self, one’s behavior patterns, thinking patterns, and feelings.

Hundreds of “experiential” retreats or workshops are offered each year in the United States for personal growth and empowerment, self-discovery, emotional healing, spiritual enlightenment, and more. These types of processes tend to elicit more profound self-awareness and dramatic, even cathartic, emotional shifts than typical teaching or dialogue.

A typical feature of experiential learning of any kind is that experiential processes are designed to be experienced, not revealed, discussed, or analyzed before participation. Therefore, the specifics of the experiential process are intentionally kept hidden from the participants until they can experience it themselves, firsthand. It allows the participants to notice their gut response—and learn from it—without any mental priming.

However, if participants are fearful or anxious of what is coming next in the retreat, they can privately ask a staff person to give them enough information about what is coming so they can feel more at ease.

How is this different from church?

Our hope is that some day the answer to this question will be “no difference.” We want to create a world where women feel connection, support, and a deep sense of belonging in their local Relieve Society. Unfortunately, there are still women who feel something missing, or want something more, from their Quorum. We’re not ok with that.

What we create at each retreat is safety, connection, sisterhood, and support to do our personal growth work as we draw closer to the Savior individually and collectively. We have specific processes—that you won’t find at church—to facilitate these objectives. Here you’ll find a group of men who love God and are willing to work together and openly address the things keeping us separate from God.

Our intention is that participants will use the tools gained at the retreat to create more authentic connection in their own Quorums.

What happens after I register?

A few weeks before your retreat, you will receive email communication that will include:

  • The exact location of the event
  • Some forms to fill out prior to the event
  • What to bring and how to prepare for the retreat
  • An offer to arrange carpools or group travel between you and other participants, though ultimately, it is your responsibility to make your own travel arrangements
What is the cost?

The full price of the retreat is $499. An early registration discount of $70 is available for participants who pay in full by the stated deadline. See the registration page for full details.

For women who have a serious interest in attending, but can’t afford the full cost of the retreat, some need-based scholarships are available.

Why do you charge for the retreat?
We would love to offer The Light Within for free, but unfortunately, it costs money to operate. Our biggest costs are accommodations, food, travel costs for experienced facilitators, and materials. If you compare the cost of similar retreats, The Light Within is one of the cheapest retreats on the market.

All of the staff are volunteers who contribute their time, expertise, and energy without any financial compensation. We do it because this work has changed our lives and we want to offer that to others.

I'm afraid of having to be vulnerable with women I don't know.

We felt that way the first time we came to a retreat. Modern culture teaches that vulnerability is weakness. However, Brené Brown teaches that vulnerability is “the catalyst for courage, compassion, and connectoin.” Personal experience has taught us that vulnerability is the gateway to these other virtues we seek.

Still, it can be challenging to step into the unknown and we have deliberately designed The Light Within to be a gentle and safe environment where vulnerability feels natural.

To give you some added safety, know that:

  • you will always have the option to opt out of any activity. You will be encouraged to participate, but your choice to opt out will always be respected.
  • many of the activities are structured so that you experience the activity for yourself—in your own mind and body—simultaneously with other women. We then invite you to share your insights after the experience, if you choose.

We will invite you to be vulnerable because that’s part of how sisterhood is created. The most important question though is whether you’re willing to be vulnerable with yourself. Sometimes that’s even harder than being vulnerable with others.

Can I arrive late or leave the retreat early?

The retreat is not like a seminar or class where you can miss a portion and still remain current with the content. The program is designed to build upon itself, so for attendees to get full benefit out of the program, they are asked to remain on site through its duration.

While we don’t allow any participants to leave the site temporarily and return back to the program, anyone is allowed to leave the program altogether, at any time, for any reason. No one is required to stay who does not wish to continue with the program.

Most participants find that once it gets started, they don’t want it to end.

Will you try to convert, reactive, or force your belief on me?
Some participants are not Church members or “active” Church members. Agency is part of the human experience and all beliefs will be respected and welcome.

You will find reference to the culture and teachings of the Church during the retreat, along with using the Church’s scriptural canon and teachings of General Authorities.

There is no anticipated outcome for the participants with regard to participation in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Any choices that individuals make regarding their relationship with the Church will be respected and supported.

Is this a therapeutic retreat that addresses mental health or other serious emotional issues?

Some participants are not Church members or “active” Church members. Agency is part of the human experience and all beliefs aThe retreat is not a substitute for professional mental health services. Many therapists highly recommend retreats like this for women committed to ongoing treatment and personal growth. If you are involved in ongoing treatment, talk to your provider about whether an intense women’s retreat or a women’s group could be valuable to you.

This is a peer-led retreat. While it will explore how to access healthy emotions and how to get past self-limiting beliefs, it is not a “therapeutic” retreat. There may be individuals serving as staff members who have mental health training and/or credentials, but they are serving at the retreat as peers, experienced in creating and supporting personal growth opportunities.will be respected and welcome.

I've heard of retreats asking people to do "crazy stuff." Is this one of those?

This retreat is designed by men who love God to support women who love God. We won’t ask you to do anything that we’re uncomfortable doing ourselves.

We subscribe to the belief that if we want life to change, we need to do something different. So, you may experience something different at the retreat, but the intention is to help you break your old patterns of belief or behavior to create the future you want for yourself. If doing something different is crazy, then I guess you’ll be asked to do something crazy.

What if I have some physical limitations?

The Light Within is not generally a physically rigorous retreat for most participants. Most of our “work” is indoors. We have always been able to accommodate the physical limitations of participants, whether due to age, weight, physical fitness or some type of disability. Of course, each woman is responsible to take care of herself physically and to communicate his physical limitations to the staff, as necessary.

How does the retreat apply to veterans or servicewomen?
We have had a number of veterans attend the program with great benefit. What The Light Within offers, which is particularly helpful for veterans includes:
  • Sisterhood. Women who serve in the military understand the necessity of having to support each other through challenging circumstances. The Light Within helps those women apply that valuable attribute in a Christ-centered environment, teaching how to deepen and create sisterhood in daily life to have the same closeness and support network they experience in the military, both in and out of the church.
  • Vision. We focus on envisioning and creating a better world for future generations. In the military, women learn to think and act as one – with unity of purpose. The Light Within helps men develop a vision for themselves and then work together to bring about their unified vision to improve their families, posterity, communities, and the Church for generations to come.
  • Emotional expression. Many women – but especially those in the military – are taught to contain their emotions because expressing emotions can be hurtful, dangerous, or feminine. At The Light Within, we teach and practice safe and healthy emotional expression, supporting each other in releasing our emotions and learning from them without hurting others or ourselves.
  • Wounds. Whether losing a loved one, a belief system, trust, or other ideals, all men have experienced wounds in their lives. The Light Within has specific processes around grieving and moving past our wounds, which has proved to be powerful to veterans who have previously experienced the program, helping them let go of the losses in their life which keep them tied to the past.
